Robert Downey Jr: From Addict To Esteemed Actor

You often hear how celebrities got into drugs, became addicted, and then went to rehab. You then hear how they relapsed and ended back in rehab. Such is the story of Robert Downey Jr – and an incredible one – that to this day inspires addicts to clean up their act, as he did, now being one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. This is his inspiring story that proves anyone can get clean and take on life again.

From Actor to Addict and Back

From the young age of six, Downey Jr. was introduced to marijuana by his father, who also battled substance abuse. The two formed an emotional bond, which led to the son becoming a daily drinker. Still, despite this, he became a well-known actor who starred in several 1980’s films, including the cult classic, Weird Science, and The Pick-Up Artist with Molly Ringwald. Ironically enough, he also played a heroin addict in Less Than Zero, which mirrored his own life and soon-to-be addict himself. In 1992, Downey Jr. earned his first Oscar nomination by playing Chaplin. It seemed he was doing well, until 1996 when he was arrested for possession of heroin and cocaine; this started his spiral downward as he was then arrested multiple times for drug offenses and was in and out of jail. He hit rock bottom in 2001 when he was found barefoot, wandering around Culver City, California. He was arrested and fired from his Ally McBeal role. It was then he was ordered to rehab, and his new life began. In 2003, Downey Jr.’s wife announced he was free of drug addiction – after she finally issued an ultimatum. In a 2013 news article, he credited a combination of 12-step programs, yoga, meditation, and therapy for his recovery. His career then took off with massive box office hits, including Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, which landed him his second Oscar nomination. The Avengers and Sherlock Holmes showcased his versatile acting skills and talent.

Pivotal Role of Treatment Centers

When an addict wants to get better, they often seek out treatment at a rehab center. These treatment facilities are crucial for individuals to not just get clean but to stay clean. An inpatient treatment center offers everything an addict needs, such as coping skills for managing stress, steps to staying clean, help with relapse, and supervision and care. When caring staff members and therapists take an active role in someone’s sobriety, it results in successful recovery for the individual. With integrative therapy and lifestyle changes, the addict sheds their former life and embraces a new, healthier life.
