Recovery Centers: What Should You Bring To Residential Treatment?

Making the decision to go to residential treatment can be daunting. If you’re preparing to go to treatment, you may be wondering, what should I bring? We’ve prepared this comprehensive list of items you should bring to treatment and items you should keep at home. Keep reading so you’ll feel prepared to take this big step toward sobriety.

What to Bring to Residential Treatment

We want you to be comfortable during your stay with us, that’s why we recommend you bring the following items when you check in for treatment:
  • Comfortable clothes – You’ll want to bring clothes you can relax in, as well as participate in various indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Comfort items – These are things that help to bring you reassurance during hard times. This could include a favorite stuffed animal or blanket or even an article of clothing from a loved one.
  • Photos – Bring printed photos of friends and loved ones, preferably not in a glass picture frame.
  • Books – Feel free to bring books to read for pleasure or any religious texts that you may find helpful or valuable during this time.
  • Stationary – Writing to friends and family members while in treatment can be a therapeutic way to stay in touch with the outside world. Bring paper, pens, envelopes, and stamps.
  • Phone numbers – Without a cell phone, you’ll need to have a list of any phone numbers you’d like to call during your stay.
  • Mp3 player and earbuds – Music can be highly beneficial during recovery. Make sure that your Mp3 player does not have camera capabilities.
  • Earplugs – We have a large facility that houses many people, so occasionally there can be unexpected noises. If you are sensitive to noise you may want to bring earplugs so that you’ll be able to have peace and quiet whenever you want.
  • A notebook or journal – Journaling your thoughts during your time in treatment can be highly therapeutic and beneficial and can give you something to look back on after you leave.
  • Hobby materials – You’re welcome to bring with you any hobby items that may help you pass the time while in treatment; this could include puzzles, sketchbooks, crosswords, etc.
  • Correctly labeled medication – Bring any necessary medications with you in their original labeled bottles, and bring a list of any medications you take along with their dosages. Loose or unlabeled medications may not be allowed into the treatment facility.

What Not to Bring to Residential Treatment

Although these may be items you use on a daily basis outside of treatment, it’s not recommended that you bring the following with you to treatment:
  • Electronic devices – This includes cell phones, tablets, DVD players, or gaming devices.
  • Drugs or alcohol – We are a substance abuse treatment facility, and therefore no drugs or alcohol are allowed on our property. If you are found with drugs or alcohol during your stay, they will be confiscated, and appropriate action will be taken.
  • Products that contain alcohol – Alcohol can be found in certain mouthwashes and facial toners. Make sure you check the ingredients of the products you’d like to bring before arriving at the treatment facility.
  • Cigarettes – This also includes e-cigarettes or vaping devices.
  • Luxury items – This could include valuable clothes, jewelry, etc. We recommend you leave these items at home as we are not responsible if they are lost or stolen while you are in treatment.
  • Outside food or drink – We will provide whatever beverages, meals, or snacks you will require during your stay, so it’s unnecessary to bring additional food or drink items.
  • Inappropriate clothing items – Leave behind any revealing clothing, gang-affiliated clothing, or any clothing that depicts any inappropriate wording, images, or logos.
  • Candles – Candles or incense are fire hazards, and thus are not permitted in our facility.
  • Aerosol products – Bring acetone-free roll-on or non-aerosol spray products.
  • Weapons of any kind – You will be very safe while in our facility, so there’s no need to bring any sort of weapon with you. If you are found with a weapon at any time, it will likely be confiscated until after your stay is over.

Additional Information

Here are a few additional notes regarding preparation for treatment:
  • When packing for treatment, the amount of toiletries you should bring depends on the anticipated length of your stay; however, we recommend that you bring at least a 30 day supply.
  • If you are debating whether or not to bring a particular item, it may be best just to leave it home.
  • Each treatment facility will have different requirements and restrictions when it comes to what items are and are not appropriate to pack. While this list may be pertinent to our treatment facility, it does not necessarily apply to all facilities. If you have any additional questions regarding what you should pack for your stay or what items we will provide, please reach out to Ardu Recovery Centers directly.
  • Before you leave for treatment, make sure a friend or family member knows where you’ll be going.
  • Give a trusted individual a key to your home or apartment so they can look after it while you’re away and enter in case of emergency.
  • Be sure to make arrangements for any children or pets that are currently under your care so that they will be looked after by a responsible party while you’re away.
  • Place a hold with the postal service so that your mail doesn’t pile up while you’re away, or elicit the help of a trusted friend or family member to collect it for you.
