What Is the Main Goal of Rehabilitation Facilities?

Written by Brandon Okey. Mina Draskovic, B.Psy., reviewed this content for accuracy.

Whether you’re looking for yourself or helping a loved one, looking into rehabilitation facilities is a good place to start a sobriety journey. Finding the right fit to accommodate your special set of needs should hold a high priority. When it comes to addiction recovery, rehabilitation facilities are often recommended, and for good reason. They’re designed to help individuals through the process of overcoming addictions. But what are some of the other main goals of rehabilitation facilities? What kinds of programs are typically available, and how do you know when you’ve found the right fit? Take a look at some of our insights into rehabilitation facilities and what purpose they serve.

What Are Rehabilitation Facilities?

Before we dive in, let’s talk about what a rehabilitation facility is. Essentially, they’re made to help those who are battling an addiction to effectively get on the road to recovery. Most often, there is an element of therapy involved, whether physical or psychological. Often when people picture a rehabilitation center, they’re imagining an extended-stay program where the individual lives at the center for a set period of time. While this is certainly an option, it’s not the only way that these facilities operate. There are plenty of options that include anything from an appointment with a therapist or attending group therapy to more immersive programs, such as overnight extended stays.

Main Goals of Rehabilitation Facilities

When considering the overall goals and purposes of rehabilitation facilities and centers, we were able to narrow it down to three main points:
  • Overcoming addictions
  • Returning to normal life
  • Obtaining mental tools for continued recovery

Overcome Addictions

It is widely known that rehabilitation facilities are there to help people to overcome addictions. While many try and do this on their own, it can be incredibly difficult without the support of professionals backing you up. Whatever addiction or challenge you might be facing, it is always best to get a team of people behind you to help you through the process. Rehabilitation centers have trained therapists and medical staff that are well-versed in helping people to overcome addictions, making this the number one main goal that these facilities are trying to achieve.

Return to Normal Life

The next goal is to help those who have entered the rehabilitation program to return to normal life. Whether you’re coming for an extended period of time or you’re making time during your week to come for classes and therapy, there is a path that you enter that can help you back to life before addiction. While it may be something that you are always experiencing, spending some time in a rehabilitation center can get you back on track to life before an intimidating, consuming addiction.

Obtaining Mental Tools for Continued Recovery

The third goal is to help those who participate in the recovery programs to obtain the proper mental tools to experience continued recovery. Overcoming addiction is absolutely possible, but you are likely to encounter triggers and temptations along the way. Ensuring that you’re equipped with the right mental tools to overcome those triggers will take you far in your continued addiction recovery.

What Programs Are Typically Available?

Now that we understand what the overarching goals are for rehabilitation facilities, let’s talk about what kinds of programs are typically available. There are a handful of treatments that are common in most centers, including:
  • Drug Rehab
  • Alcohol Rehab
  • Residential Treatment

Drug Rehab

Drug rehab covers an incredibly wide variety of addictions. Whether it’s an addiction to cocaine, nicotine, pain killers, or anything in between, drug rehab is a great option for helping individuals to overcome their addiction. As noble as it may be for someone to try and do this on their own, without the help of trained professionals, relapse is very likely. Getting involved in a drug rehab program is a great first step to moving past this addiction.

Alcohol Rehab

While an addiction to alcohol may have less of a social stigma attached to it than drugs, it is still an incredibly addictive substance, and should be treated as such. Alcoholism makes itself manifest in many ways, and it can be difficult for someone to know when they’ve crossed the line into an addiction to alcohol.

Residential Treatment

Residential treatment is an overarching term that covers different therapy options for those dealing with addiction. This often includes medically assisted detox, group, and individual therapy, etc. The upside to residential treatment in a rehabilitation facility is that you will have consistent medical care to help you through the challenges that you may face during your recovery, helping you to avoid any potential relapse.

How Do I Know I’ve Found the Right Fit?

There are a number of things that you should consider when looking for the right rehabilitation center. Finding one that fits your budget, is close to your support system, and that has the programs you’re looking for, is a good place to start. However, on top of that, we encourage you to meet with individuals and therapists at the centers that you’re considering, because the most important part of finding the right fit is ensuring that you feel comfortable with the program and how it will be run. Whether it’s for yourself or for a loved one, you will know you’ve found the right place by the way it makes you feel. Does it feel peaceful? Does it feel promising? Does it feel hopeful? That’s when you know you’ve found the right fit.
